What
kind of rifles does Bettin Custom Guns build?
We specialize in building super accurate, light weight hunting, tactical
and long range rifles using Proof Research (formerly Advanced Barrel
Systems) carbon wrapped barrels.
Do you have “standard” package rifles?
Not really, the rifle packages on our web page that are meant to serve
as an example of the type of rifles we build. They contain the components
that we commonly use and recommend. Every rifle is custom built to the
specific specs of the customer.
How long does it take to get a custom rifle built?
Currently, we are running 8-10 months turn around from the time you
order, until rifle is ready for delivery.
What does a Bettin Custom rifle cost?
Each rifle is priced out individually according to the specs the customer
desires. We price them out on a parts plus labor basis. If you contact
us about a rifle, we will send you a detailed list of components and
labor with itemized prices. Generally, most rifles average $5000.
Do I order all the parts for my rifle and then send them to
Bettin Custom Guns?
No. We would prefer to order the parts for you. We want to be sure that
the parts ordered are correct, there are many options on custom actions
and stocks. There are as many as 15-20 detailed options on some actions
alone. Too many cooks ruin the pot!
What if I have some of the components already?
We will be happy to talk with you about the components that you may
already have, such as an action or stock, and see if it is something
that we feel will work for your particular application.
Do you build rifles on factory actions (i.e. Remington 700)?
We can discuss building on a factory action, but generally speaking
using a custom action preferred. Some exceptions are for guys who insist
on have a “controlled round feed” action. There are not
many good custom choices for that option.
Can I have my rifle chambered in any caliber I want?
Yes. However, there are some calibers that we won’t chamber unless
we use a custom reamer. Specifically the Weatherby calibers, they have
throating issues that make them inherently in-accurate unless they are
chambered with a modified throat.
What is throating and how is it done?
There is a lot of confusion about throating and its function. The throat
of a chamber is the portion of the barrel from the end of the case to
where the lands of the barrel are full diameter. It is a gradual taper
that functions to “funnel” the bullet into the lands of
the barrel. Typically this area of the chamber is built into the chamber
reamer and is a given angle an
d distance according to SAMMI specs. However, this area of the chamber
can be cut to specifically enhance the performance of a given bullet.
This is typically referred to as throating the chamber for a specific
bullet. We prefer to order a custom chamber reamer from Pacific Tool
and Gauge, with the custom throat built in it. They have a huge library
of available throat specs for specific bullets, in nearly every caliber.
You must let us know if you want this option, if not, your chamber will
be cut to SAMMI specs.
